Scientists have developed a new method  of achieving artificial photosynthesis, producing high-energy hydrocarbons by using electron-rich gold nanoparticles as a catalyst.

Plants convert energy from sunlight into glucose by rearranging molecules of water and carbon dioxide. The new process mimics this natural ability via artificial chemical reactions that create liquid fuel, without requiring  chlorophyll . The ultimate aim is to produce good quality fuel by using CO2  and sunlight
Liquid fuel is very safer and easier to transport.
But the main limitation of this method is the use of gold.
It takes atleast 10 years to economically produce the liquid fuels from CO2 and to bring this technology into practical existence..
